BULA vinaka!

Before going to Fiji, I heard a lot about it from my friends.  Like I, they thought that Fiji was the perfect honeymoon destination, a place that always had perfect weather, smiling and welcoming locals, happy music, white sandy beaches, blue crystal clear water, tons of islands to explore and gorgeous bures to stay in.  You know, your idyllic postcard really.

Well, I, like my friends, was wrong.

Fiji is that, and MUCH MUCH more!

I was pleasantly surprised with the vast amount of activities that Fiji offers – from the chill-out and do nothing all day long on your own private ISLAND in the Mamanuca Islands to the more adrenaline-rushing shark feed diving in Beqa, or coconut farming and village treks in Taveuni.

Just when I thought, “oh Fiji would be a great place for honeymooning couples” then we would go to another location that made me re-think and decide that Fiji was a perfect place for diving and extreme sports enthusiasts.  Then, we’d go to the middle of nowhere in the jungle armed with nothing but a knife and have to find our own coconuts and figure out how to open it and drink the juice and again, I’d have to decide if maybe Fiji was a paradise for people trying to escape the stresses and realities of the “real world.”

No matter what we did or what we experienced, however, there was one common ground that really makes the Fijian experience what it was.  And that, of course, is the people there.  You know you have arrived to an island filled with some of the NICEST and most optimistic people in the world, when  you hear the words “Bula!”  More than likely, that “bula!” will be accompanied by a big toothy smile and probably even a song and dance.

What I loved was that even there were no tourists around and we were fortunate enough to pass by the locals dormitory, tent, or hang out place, that song and laughter was STILL there.  It wasn’t all for show.

My team had an excellent time there – in fact more than half of them are seriously thinking of quitting and moving back to Fiji to find work (and even MORE happiness there!)  And I can see why.  Fiji really does cast a spell on everybody who goes there, making you want to go back time and time again.  I know I will be there again.  I can’t wait (I can’t believe I’m actually saying this…) to have another bowl of kava and tasty lovo with my new Fijian friends.

Thanks for everything!  Vinaka vaka levo!

Love,

Janet Hsieh
